Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of power.

And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.

And the asses of Kish Saul's father were lost. And Kish said to Saul his son, Take now one of the servants with thee, and arise, go seek the asses.

And he passed through mount Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalisha, but they found them not: then they passed through the land of Shalim, and there they were not: and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they found them not.

And when they were come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that was with him, Come, and let us return; lest my father leave caring for the asses, and take thought for us.

And he said unto him, Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honourable man; all that he saith cometh surely to pass: now let us go thither; peradventure he can shew us our way that we should go.

Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we?

And the servant answered Saul again, and said, Behold, I have here at hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver: that will I give to the man of God, to tell us our way.

(Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to enquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for he that is now called a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)

Then said Saul to his servant, Well said; come, let us go. So they went unto the city where the man of God was.

And as they went up the hill to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said unto them, Is the seer here?

And they answered them, and said, He is; behold, he is before you: make haste now, for he came to day to the city; for there is a sacrifice of the people to day in the high place:

As soon as ye be come into the city, ye shall straightway find him, before he go up to the high place to eat: for the people will not eat until he come, because he doth bless the sacrifice; and afterwards they eat that be bidden. Now therefore get you up; for about this time ye shall find him.

And they went up into the city: and when they were come into the city, behold, Samuel came out against them, for to go up to the high place.

Now the LORD had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came, saying,

To morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him to be captain over my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me.

And when Samuel saw Saul, the LORD said unto him, Behold the man whom I spake to thee of! this same shall reign over my people.

Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, where the seer's house is.

And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the seer: go up before me unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me to day, and to morrow I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thine heart.

And as for thine asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father's house?

And Saul answered and said, Am not I a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou so to me?

And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the parlour, and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were bidden, which were about thirty persons.

And Samuel said unto the cook, Bring the portion which I gave thee, of which I said unto thee, Set it by thee.

And the cook took up the shoulder, and that which was upon it, and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, Behold that which is left! set it before thee, and eat: for unto this time hath it been kept for thee since I said, I have invited the people. So Saul did eat with Samuel that day.

And when they were come down from the high place into the city, Samuel communed with Saul upon the top of the house.

And they arose early: and it came to pass about the spring of the day, that Samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying, Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad.

And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us, (and he passed on), but stand thou still a while, that I may shew thee the word of God.

　　撒上 9:3> 扫罗的家境如何？　

　　9:3　扫罗的父亲吩咐他去寻找丢了的驴。驴有多种用途，在圣经时代是载运货物的牲口，用来运货、拉车与耕作，是当时必需的劳动生活资源，就连最穷苦的家庭也会养一头驴。驴多是富有的象征，驴丢了实属不幸。扫罗的父亲有许多头驴，证明他相当富有。　

　　撒上 9:3-27> 我们的一生，是无数个偶然事件的组合吗？　

　　9:3-27　我们常会以为事件是偶然发生的，但是从扫罗的事可以看出，神可能使用平常的事件，来达到祂的目的。我们要相信一切的境遇皆可能是“神所命定”的，对塑造我们的一生都是非常重要的。请你思想最近影响你的顺逆际遇，你能否从其中看出神的旨意？祂可能想使你具有某种素质，或者要领你在另一方面事奉祂。　

　　撒上 9:6> 撒母耳在百姓中的形象是……　

　　9:6　扫罗仆人所说先知住的这个城，可能是拉玛；在示罗附近与非利士人争战以后（ 7:17 ），撒母耳搬到那里。扫罗与撒母耳同住在便雅悯的地业以内，竟然不知道他是谁，显出他对属灵事物的无知。　

　　撒上 9:21> 扫罗的回答，反应出他是怎样的人？　

　　9:21　扫罗吐露出“你为何对我说这样的话呢？”显明他心底将会一再面对的问题──自卑感。他像落叶一样随风飘摇不定，在自己的感觉与信念之间左右摆动。他的言行都以自我为中心，只为自己担心。例如，他说自己的家族是以色列人至小的支派中“至小的”，但是 9 章 1 节说他父亲是个“大能的勇士”（或作“大财主”）。（便雅悯支派是十二个支派之中最小的，因为他们不道德的罪行导致内战，几乎受到被灭绝的处罚──参士 19-21 。）他不愿承担神赐给他的责任。后来，他保留一部分战利品，那是他不应当存留的，因此受到撒母耳的责备，他却将责任推卸到士兵身上（ 15:21 ），说他们实在想用那些牲畜向神献祭（ 15:15 ）。　

　　他虽然蒙神呼召，有使命在身，却不断地挣扎，心中充满嫉妒、不安、骄横、任性、欺诈。他并没有立志将自己全心全意地献给神，因为不愿意让神的爱充满内心，因而失去平安，所以他从未成为属神之人。

撒母耳记上第九章　　扫罗的出现（九 1-14 ）　

　　以色列第一位王，不是大却是扫罗，现在介绍给读者认识。最早的读者也像我们一样，完全相信熟悉扫罗乃第一位统治以色列的王；所以这个故事对读者并不稀奇，而是强调发生的事令扫罗很惊奇。有一连串的机会他可以与撒母耳面对面：但古代及现代的读者，皆必须明白，上帝在那些最小处境中治理。扫罗所关心的乃是迷失的驴，他去寻访撒母耳惟一的原因，乃是先知具有神奇的能力，能够‘看见’其他人所不能够看见的（注意 9 节提及先知的旧名）。　

　　表面上，这故事将伟大的先知，看作好像只是一些本地、不大着名的人物，这里的叙述其实有一个戏剧性的理由；叙述者使用这种戏剧手法，强调扫罗及其仆人不认识撒母耳。在另一方面，扫罗寻找驴子却找到一个王国；在另一方面，撒母耳正在寻找一位合适的王，却找到一个没有政治意识的年青人。这就是意义所在。　

　　很值得注意的是，虽然在第八章曾对王权的黑暗面进行分析，也不管稍后扫罗具有显着的缺点，但这章圣经介绍他光明的一面，开始时突出他的高大身材和给人的印象（在当时这是很重要的事）。他是个很好的人，他后来的成就，显示他在各方面是个能干的人。有关他的背景的一件有趣的事，是他的支派是便雅悯（ 1 节）；这个细小的支派从未想到会管辖其他较大的支派，它的位置（看下图）是在两个强大敌对的支派，以法莲和犹大的缓地带。这样，一位便雅悯的王，可以期望减轻冲突，并且协助以色列对抗非利士人。每件事看来很美好；扫罗会成为以色列理想的王，这个时候没有任何事情可以阻止他达成真正的成就。不是其他，乃是错误；‘不在乎我们的星座，乃在乎我们自己’，正如莎士比亚剧中卡斯亚（ Cassius ）对布提斯（ Brutus ）所说的。　

　　这是值得停下来思想我们这个时代怎样期望新的政治领袖。肯定我们会衡量他的志向和驱动力；证实他的知识能力及领导的品质；最少有一定程度的政治经验。扫罗一点都没有表现这些特征（以后的事可以证明），但他也有某些才干，最重要的事乃他是上帝所使用的人，抱负、自信和经验，可能促使一个人不听从上帝的引导。　

　　先知与君王（九 15-27 ）　

　　在这段经文中，扫罗是一位被指定的王，虽然他尚未知道这件事，并且对仉待他的宴席有些惊诧。撒母耳在这里则表现出是一位先知；他将政治领导权移交给扫罗，但他作先知的地位乃是保留。有三件事可以证明他的先知地位，这些特色使他与王有所不同：　

　　（甲）未来会向他屮示（ 15 节）。　

　　（乙）别人未知的事却向他屮示（ 20 节）。　

　　（丙）上帝的话语，即上帝藉他对其他人赐予教训。　

　　这些特色使先知很独特且无价，对整个国家和以色列的王都同样有意义。撒母耳事实上是君主政体的模范先知，由扫罗开始，先知职事的存在，是上帝赐给每个王的礼物。每个王都可以明白及得到上帝引导的权利──只要他愿意听从和遵行。　

　　另一方面，这次上帝为国家的利益所安排的，减少某些王权专制倾向。王将时常感觉要征询先知的意见，事实上他们有时候也会听从他。在此情形下，以色列新的王权是个‘政体’（ Constitutional ），先知对王的绝对权力产生一种制衡作用。理想的以色列政府，乃是君王与先知和谐及团结地工作，这样王可以表现他自己领导的角色，不单在战争中（ 16 节）。　

　　在这一章圣经中，特别是十六节，对君王的角色有很积极的评估，与十八章十一至十八节对王朝的消极评估形成对比。这对比使对读者有些惊讶，并且大部分的学者解释这几章乃来自不同的传统（或者是文献）。然而，从两方面来检讨王权是很实际的：以色列在王的领导下，带来好处及坏处。可见，在起初的一两代，他们的主要角色乃是积极地使以色列脱离非利士人的威胁。在此情形下，透过王来执行（从扫罗到大）。上帝扮演祂是以色列的救主的古老角色，正如十六节指出，以色列人不单是要求一个王并且向撒母耳埋怨，他们内心的呼喊乃是要抵抗非利士人的入侵，感觉到需要更多不同的支派协助。在这个王权下，上帝会答应祈祷并且惩罚不信，这是历史的两面性；它让我们看见信靠上帝，并且在属灵的方面，看见上帝在全人类的历史中工作的原则。──《每日研经丛书》

　　九 1-14 扫罗来到拉玛　

　　到了这里，圣经作者极可能是使用另一份文件来作参考数据，但无论如何，他的文学技巧和戏剧效果都是无可置疑的。文中没有任何提示，场景就已由撒母耳转移至扫罗，而此处第一次提到他的名字。读者会感到奇怪，撒母耳为何会出去寻找和设立一个王；但每个读者必已知道扫罗是以色列的第一个王，因而经文介绍他的名字时，不会叫人惊讶。故事继续解释撒母耳和扫罗会面的情况。留意作者如何有技巧地掩饰拉玛是先知撒母耳的城。（拉玛是撒母耳的家乡，但他是刚从他的巡回审判回来，参七 16-17 ）。唯一的提示在于「苏弗地」（ 5 节），而拉玛就在苏弗地（参一 1 ）。　

　　从某个角度看，这是一个典型的「乞丐变王子」的故事。扫罗并不是出于一个乞丐或贫民家庭，而他身型「健壮」（ 2 节）；但他也不是出于富有的家，而他所属的支派──便雅悯──在以色列中是细小和毫不重要的（参 21 节），在北面的以法莲和南面的犹大面前，黯然失色。扫罗可能并没有野心或期望去作王。本段的重点也在于扫罗的单纯和缺乏野心。他并不是出去争取任何名誉或权力，而只是寻找他父亲失去的产业。他并没有寻求作王；但可以说，是神寻找他和使他作王。扫罗甚至连撒母耳是谁也不知道，而遇见他时也认不出来。我们可以想象，在第八章的事件之后，有些充满野心的人可能会尝试求见撒母耳，以其才能去打动撒母耳，或取得他的喜悦。扫罗并不是这样的人。　

　　第 12 节如撒母耳在拉玛筑成的（七 17 ），祭坛往往位于山上（或人造的小丘上），而这些「邱坛」是用作露天的圣所。从本段清楚可见，撒母耳不只是先知和士师，并且还有一些祭司的职务。　

　　九 15-27 撒母耳接待扫罗　

　　故事至此清楚交代了，没有任何人安排撒母耳和扫罗见面。神控制着扫罗的动向，并在此直接向撒母耳启示，说扫罗就是祂选立为王的人。因此，当两人相遇时，撒母耳已认识扫罗，并且知道怎样使扫罗作王。但在这一章的事件中，扫罗对神的计划仍一无所知：撒母耳只是渐渐让他知道，神在他身上有特殊的计划。　

　　在第 20 节，撒母耳提到「以色列众人所仰慕的」，读者明白他所指的是他们对王的渴慕，但这样的评论当然叫扫罗感到疑惑。后来，撒母耳在第 24 节所作的行动，表示扫罗是一位尊贵的上宾，但他仍没有把整个真相表白。本段继续指出，扫罗并没有贪图作王或掌权，他甚至现在仍不知道未来的职分。扫罗没有争取权力，撒母耳也没有提拔自己亲密的朋友作王；扫罗完全是神所拣选的。　

　　「王」这字并没有在本章出现。第 16 节和十章 1 节都是用「君」（希伯来文：）。这希伯来字的准确意义备受争议；意思可能是「候任君王」，暗示扫罗仍未真正作王，直等到第十章在米斯巴的公开仪式。无论如何，在经文中，这字词也并非与君王相反，因为它与「膏」立连用时，就是指作王。经文表明了扫罗作君主的责任：他的任务是救以色列人脱离非利士人的手，和「治理」（直译：「限制」、「控制」）以色列民。这样，神就要借着扫罗，满足当时最重要的两种政治需要。第一是打败敌人，否则他们会使以色列人溃散而亡。第二是以色列人需要内部的团结合一和强大的政府。
